Description: The material used is 316L stainless steel sintered.
The MIM part is a rotor in a 'safe and arm' device of a missile warhead, where the rotor separates the sensitive detonator of the pyrotechnic chain from the main charge.

A mechanical timer which is engaged with the rotor delays it's rotation thus letting a safety distance be achieved. This rotor is an entirely new MIM part the hypercycling gear teeth of which could not be produced by any standard machine tool. The part has, as can be seen, a very complicated shape with several holes and protusions in different directions, and it is estimated that in order to machine the part from solid metalthe cost would be of the order of seven times that of the injection moulded part.
