Thesis Competition

The winners of the 2008 PM Thesis Competition received their prizes at the Opening Plenary Session of the Euro PM2008 Congress and Exhibition, held in Mannheim, Germany 29th September to 1st October. EPMA President, Ingo Cremer, presented a cheque for €750 to Ms Nil Unal for the Diploma / Masters category and Dr Sastry Kandukuri received a cheque for €1000 for the Doctorate / PhD category. The prizes were sponsored by Höganäs AB of Sweden. The winners were also given complimentary registration to the congress, where they had the opportunity to mix with PM experts from both academia and industry.

Both competition winners were invited to give a short presentation on their theses. Mrs Unal, who completed her degree at the Istanbul University of Technology, spoke on "The Effect of Boron Barbide Addition on the Structural and Mechanical Properties of Tungsten Matrix Composites". Dr Kandukuri, from KU Leuven, gave a presentation on his chosen topic: "Field Assisted Sintering and Characterisation of Ultra Fine and Nanostructured Aluminium Alloys".

The EPMA Thesis Competition aims to develop an interest in ad to promote powder metallurgy among young scientists at European academic establishments and to encourage research at under-graduate and post-graduate levels. The next competition will coincide with the following World PM Congress to be held in Florence, Italy, 10th - 14th October 2010.
