Description:
The four piece inlet camshaft is made from drawn steel tubing onto which are liquid phase sintered the cams made from Astaloy E steel powder - a hard, wear resistant PM steel alloy containing 2.5% C, 5% Cr, 1% Mo, 2% Cu, 0.5% P and 1% Si. The sintered drive end component, made from a PM iron-copper-carbon alloy, and the sintered iron soft magnetic reluctor used for electronically sensing the position of the camshaft, are brazed onto the steel tubing.

The composite PM camshaft displayed is made for the new variable valve control (VVC) 4-cylinder engine used in the Rover MG F sports car.

Composite PM camshafts where sintered steel cam lobes are fitted onto hollow steel tubes can offer the design engineer a weight saving of up to 40% compared with cast camshafts, and at the same time provide improved mechanical properties. The composite PM camshaft specified by Rover not only provides a significant weight saving, but its design features have given a significant boost to the power of the new VVC engine.
