Industrial enterprise with a strong global presence

The name Bosch is closely associated with the automotive industry. But Bosch is not just famous for automotive technology products like gasoline, diesel and chassis systems and car electronics. Bosch also supplies many other products and services, including industrial technology, power tools, security solutions and household appliances. In 2007 sales worldwide came to 46.3 billion euros with some 271,000 associates. The company originated as “Workshop for Precision Mechanics and Electrical Engineering” founded in 1886 by Robert Bosch (1861-1942).

To preserve its technologically leading position, Bosch spends considerable sums for research and development every year. In 2007, its research and development expenditure came to 3.6 billion euros, or 7.7 percent of sales. Its most research-intensive business sector is Automotive Technology, whose research and development expenditure comes to 2.8 billion euros, or roughly 10 percent of sales. With more than 3,000 inventions, Bosch is the most prolific applicant in Germany. In the field of automotive technology, Bosch is world leader in terms of the number of patents.

The special ownership structure of Robert Bosch GmbH guarantees the entrepreneurial freedom of the Bosch Group. Ninety-two percent of the share capital of Robert Bosch GmbH is held by Robert Bosch Stiftung GmbH, a charitable foundation. The majority of voting rights are held by Robert Bosch Industrietreuhand KG, an industrial trust. The entrepreneurial ownership functions are carried out by the trust. The remaining shares are held by the Bosch family and by Robert Bosch GmbH.
