Watch Back

Alliance, Zone artisanale des Belles Ouvrières
25410 SAINT VIT, Tel: 03 81 87 52 49 Fax: 03 81 87 65 04
Contact: Mr Jean-Claude BIHR E:(alliance-mim@alliancemim.com

Product Density (g/cm3): 7,92
Product Tensile: 450 MPa
Product Hardness: 140 HV1
Finishing: Turning and finishing (sand blasting and polishing)
Summary: The goal was to manufacture a watch back simulating the fan of a turbo jet engine. This kind of design cannot be produced with conventional technologies and MIM has been chosen because it can replicate the real way of turbo jet manufacturing by assembling all individual vane on a rotor. This part costs 8,5 euros in production. Cost reduction is not relevant because no other technology is able to manufacture a part like this. Some can think that lost wax casting is an opportunity but required accuracy and surface finish are definitely not compatible with casting. This part introduces the fact that for some application MIM is the only technology available.

Product Density (g/cm3): 7.8
Product Tensile: 420 MPa
Product Hardness: 64 HRB
Finishing: Compacting, Sintering, Sizing, Induction Hardening, Tempering
Summary: This device is very reliable. It is activated with a low current from an AA battery and has been proven as an extraordinary safe mechanism.
Defining the final shape of the parts has been difficult to achieve the function expected. In order to approve the device, the parts have to pass a durability test of 500,000 cycles. This Safety Valve is a great innovation, as well as a very compact assembly and with a low energy consumption.

Electrode 90-S

Advanced Materials Technologies Pte. Ltd. 3 Tuas Lane
Singapore 638612 Tel: +65 68636551 Fax: +65 68636550
Contact: Velda Josef

Product Density (g/cm3): 18.4
Product Tensile: 800
Finishing: Sizing
Product Hardness: 25 HRC
Summary: Electrode 90-S and Insulator 90-S together form the electrode tip of an ablation system powered by radiofrequency (RF) energy. When the energy, through the electrode, encounters the higher impedance of the human tissue, heat is generated. The heat destroys and coagulates the cells.Electrode 90-S, which has flower-shaped tip with intricate three-dimensional features on average measuring 0.7 mm, is especially designed for MIM (Metal Injection Molding). The tungsten-iron-nickel composition for this component reflects the greater freedom MIM offers in terms of material selections.

Insulator 90-S

Advanced Materials Technologies Pte. Ltd. 3 Tuas Lane
Singapore 638612 Tel: +65 68636551 Fax: +65 68636550
Contact: Velda Josef

Product Density (g/cm3): 3.92
Product Tensile: 350 (rupture strength)
Product Hardness: 1500 HV300 gf
Summary: Insulator 90-S boasts an average wall thickness of 0.3 mm. This component, like its counterpart, is also designed especially for CIM (Ceramic Injection Molding). Made of pure alumina for structural rigidity and low thermal conductivity, Insulator houses both Electrode and suction channel, making it one of the components with the most elaborate internal features.

Product Density (g/cm3): 7.12
Product Tensile: 900
Product Hardness: 71 - 73 HRA
Summary: Generally a part like the presented one is produced by two different parts if a standard TPA press is used: the hub is press-fitted on the toothing.
The costs and mass production advantages are clear if the part is produced by a single pressing step. The power unit keeps under control the movements in order to optimize the transfer phase: therefore the best "filling position" is obtained. During the compaction process the power unit keeps under control the punches movements and the forces on the punches as well almost just the press position. The final density amount and distribution is very good.

Product Density (g/cm3): 7.6
Product Tensile: 950
Product Hardness: 300
Finishing: Sand blasting + polishing
Summary: The four metal components which are needed for one specatacle are attached at the relevant opthalmic lenses. These ‘pins’ are geometrically quite complex. As a result, the Metal Injection Moulding technology became interesting for producing these components. This technology which has been used at OBEfor more than ten years, was the ideal method of production due to the special shape of the parts. MIM also enabled a stable stainless steel one peice construction. As a result, the pins are strong enough even if too much power is used in the separatingor joining process.

Density (g/cm3): 6.9
Product Tensile: 450
Product Hardness: 85 Rb
Finishing: Size OWC spline, CNC turn (Operations 7A/B), CNC turn (Operation 10), CNC turn, mill and ream pinion pin holes (Operation 20), Broach internal spline, Drill cross-holes, Deburr in slurry, Roller burnish hub diameter,Balance
Summary: Extensive material characterization and component testing was conducted by Stackpole in order to ensure good correlation between the FEA assumptions and actual properties. The complexity and uniqueness of its shape and design, as well as functional attributes of this carrier assembly clearly demonstrates all the advantages and marketing strengths and capabilities of powder metallurgy. We, as a powder metal producer and designer, closely worked with our customer on this collaborative design. This is the first three piece planetary carrier (Le Pelletier design), designed and manufactured in powder metal as opposed to recently launched similar products that are made out of forged and stamped steel components that are assembled by welding. This product is another excellent example that demonstrates the capabilities of powder metallurgy.
