Static And Dynamic Characterisation Of Ni-based Superalloy Powders For Powder Bed Fusion Application

Abstract

Understanding the ideal powder properties required for powder bed fusion additive manufacturing (PBF-AM) is essential to maximize the quality of the build and reduce the possibility of generating defects. To date the testing techniques typically used to characterise powders in the metallurgy field are applied to PBF-AM. However the results are commonly untranslatable to the PBF-AM process. In this study a newly developed semi-automatic experimental set-up associated with a dynamic conditioning system was employed to quantify the static and dynamic characteristics of IN625 Ni-based superalloy powder. In addition to the traditional analysis of particle morphology particle size distribution apparent density and flowability special attention was given to testing the dynamic angle of repose via Granudrum™. These results will provide new insights into the optimizations of the recoating parameters for the powder-bed fusion process.
