EPMA recently organised and delivered the Design For PM Seminar, which took place 27 – 28 April at the Best Western Plus Tower Hotel Bologna. Over 50 delegates from across the PM supply chain were present during this 2-day seminar that featured lectures from well-known PM industry presenters.
The presentations covered a range of Powder Metallurgy topics from an introduction to PM (processes, materials and a comparison with alternative technologies), through to the mechanical behaviour of PM materials in correlation to porosity and in relation to the microstructural features of PM steels. The two main damage mechanisms of structural parts, fatigue and contact fatigue, was discussed in detail. Presentations on the guidelines imposed by the key step of the technology, i.e. by shaping, were also presented, introducing a topic on design, which featured the specific description of design for fatigue, with examples of how to design a PM gear. Three case studies were presented that highlighted real-life examples of how to design PM Gears and Shock Absorbers.
Within the programme a factory tour took place at the famous Ducati motorcycle factory, which was well received and attended by the participants.
“The Design for PM Seminar was an intensive 2-day seminar that generated a great deal of thought provoking discussions and interest” explained Dr. Olivier Coube, EPMA’s Technical Director. He went onto add “I would like to thank all the presenters who took time out of their busy schedules to assist with the content of this seminar. Work has already started on a 2018 PM orientated seminar, with more details available in due course.”
Presentations from the event will be made available to the participants via a secure website link in due course.
