Moulding Equipment for the Processing of Coarse Powders by MIM

Abstract

Metal injection moulding is a mature technology for the net shape production of complex metallic components. Typically the MIM process utilises small spherical powders, having particle sizes below 30 �m. Nowadays there are tendencies to use coarser powder particles for the MIM processing. There are different reasons for these tendencies: on one hand there is a growing demand for Titanium MIM parts, where coarser powder particles are used because of the high reactivity of the Titanium. On the other hand there are economical considerations to use coarser powders also for the production of classical MIM materials like steels. The processing of coarser powders is generating additional demand to the design of the plasticizing unit of the injection moulding machine because there is a significantly higher wear as during the processing of standard powders. This paper will address methods to minimize the wear problem. Test results for the processing of low alloyed steel powders with particle sizes < 45�m and < 63�m as well as Ti6Al4V powder < 45�m will be discussed.
