Structure of Zirconium and Zirconium Alloy Consolidated by High Voltage Electric Discharge Consolidation

Abstract

The consolidation of high density and high strength structure of zirconium and zirconium alloy powder is investigated and optimal operating parameters are defined. The powder of zirconium and zirconium alloy was consolidated by the high voltage electric discharge consolidation (HVEDC). It was found that density and strength of consolidated materials reach maximum values at certain magnitudes of applied pressure and high voltage electrical pulse current. There is an upper level for the discharge voltage and applied pressure beyond which density and toughness of the consolidated material drastically decreases and furthermore the powder material disintegrates like an exploding wire. The study of the microstructure and macrostructure of consolidated materials was carried out on the obtained samples of zirconium and zirconium alloy by optical metallography.
