Microstructure of metal injection moulded Ti-6Al-4V after thermo-chemical treatment

Abstract

Thermo-chemical treatment (TCT), a technique in which hydrogen is used as a temporary alloying element, can refine the microstructure and improve the final mechanical properties of the Ti6Al4V (Ti-64) alloy. In this study the microstructure of Ti-64 compacts that have been fabricated via the metal injection moulding technique (MIM) have been studied after being subjected to TCT. Ti-64 MIM components have a coarse and lamellar microstructure and therefore in order to modify the microstructure, TCT has been utilised. Ti-64 powders with powder size of -25?m were injection-moulded and then subjected to solvent debinding and thermal debinding as well as sintering in an argon atmosphere. A selected number of samples were hot isostatically pressed (HIPped) and also thermo-chemically treated.
