An Investigation on the Compressibility of a Pre-alloyed Mg-Al-Zn Powder

Abstract

The objective of the present work was to study the compressibility of a rapidly solidified, pre-alloyed Mg-Al-Zn powder with a chemical composition similar to AZ91 magnesium alloy. For this purpose, the mentioned powder was cold pressed into cylindrical compacts with a diameter of 10 mm using compaction pressures ranging from 100 to 600 MPa. The densities of green compacts were measured by both Archimedes method and direct calculation of volume and dividing it by weight. In order to examine the effect of compaction pressure on the densification of the powder particles, the fracture surfaces of green compacts were studied. Furthermore, the densification data were fitted to the three general and widely quoted compaction equations proposed by Heckel, Panelli and Ambrosio, and Ge, to find the equation which fit the experimental data best and to quantify the compaction behaviour and plastic deformability of the powder.
