Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) of Gas Atomized CoCrNb Powders

Abstract

Medical and dental prosthesis are usually produced from CoCr alloys. Related parts are mostly produced by investment casting processes, so the use of a wax model for manufacturing of casting mould is necessary. New near net shape techniques has been used nowadays as an alternative route for manufacturing of medical parts. In this case model made by computer assisted design (CAD) replaces the physical one. This paper investigates the suitability of gas atomized powders for direct metal laser sintering (DMLS). Powders were produced in two different gas atomization plants, both of them using close-coupled nozzle. Pressed samples sintered under vacuum were used to simulate laser sintering. Prototypes were produced in a DMLS device. Effects of the powder properties and sintering cycles were investigated. Physical properties and microstructural aspects were presented and discussed. It was possible to get very high sintered densities, even for coarser powders, with the use of high sintering temperature and the presence of a liquid phase during sintering.
