Sinter Joining of Metal Injection Moulded Superalloy Components

Abstract

Because of its potential to replace complex assemblies with a solid structure, sinter joining of Metal Injection Moulded (MIM) components has attracted both academic and industrial interest. This study is focusing on the development of a new sinter joining method for MIM components. The MIM process was used to create specimens made of Inconel 718 containing a lap at one end. After solvent debinding, specimens were paired together to form a simple component with several different pastes being applied to the joint surfaces. The joint strengths and cross-section areas of the sintered components were analysed to determine the most effective process of sinter bonding.
