Abstract

The objective of this work consists of presenting a new design approach employed to develop diamond tools according to their performance. The methods employed allow calculating the durability and the efficacy of diamond tools when being submitted to a specific cutting process. This approach, implemented in the format of an on-line software application (Tool Selector), uses a series of phenomenological models normally employed to explain the wear and contact mechanisms between stone and tools (mostly using diamonds embedded in binders), to establish output cutting variables varying according to the set of cutting conditions employed. Since stone and tool characteristics are taken into account using the present approach, this creates a fully integrated model where all conventional inputs are considered to evaluate the outcome.
