Enhancement of Physical and Mechanical Properties of Oxide Dispersion Strengthened Tungsten Heavy Alloys

Abstract

Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) tungsten heavy alloys are well known for their high mechanical properties which make them useful for wide range of high temperature applications. In this research 5wt.%Ni/W matrix composites reinforced with 2 wt.% Y2O3, ZrO2, or TiO2 particles were prepared by powder metallurgy technique through compaction and vacuum sintering at 1500°C for 1 h. Microstructure, mechanical and magnetic properties of the sintered samples were investigated. The results showed inhomogeneous distribution of Ni through the matrix and the appearance of pores for W-Ni-TiO2 and W-Ni-ZrO2 samples. However W-Ni-Y2O3 composite has shown the lowest porosity, and consequently the higher density and compressive strength. The hardness values for W-Ni-TiO2 composites were higher than those of W-Ni-ZrO2 and W-Ni-Y2O3. The magnetic measurements showed that all the samples are diamagnetic at room temperature. The coercivity (HC) and remanence (Mr) for W-Ni-TiO2 were higher than those of W-Ni-Y2O3 and W-Ni-ZrO2 samples.
