Low elastic modulus Ti-17Nb processed by powder injection moulding and post-125 heat treatments

Abstract

Ti-Nb alloys are attractive as implant materials because of their low elastic modulus, high strength, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. The fabrication of binary Ti-17Nb by MIM technology was reported recently. Parts combining elastic moduli of about 83 GPa and good strengths were obtained. In this work, it is shown that the modulus of elasticity can be further decreased to below 50 GPa while retaining good strength by using appropriate post-sintering heat treatments.
