Adapting PM/HIP Technology to the Alloy A286

Abstract

A286 is an iron base high temperature alloy that is precipitation hardened to high strength levels. The alloy has been used for many years and maintains good strength and corrosion resistance at temperatures up to 700C. PM/HIP technology offers a new way of manufacturing A286 that can produce near net shapes with higher material utilization, less processing steps, faster deliveries and has the potential for lower costs. Additionally PM/HIP technology offers a "greener" approach to manufacturing this material. The purpose of this work is to discuss the manufacturing approach for A286 PM/HIP product and evaluate properties as measured by tensile, stress rupture and toughness testing and to compare these results with A286 made by conventional technology.
