An Empirical Surface Treatment Influence Factor Model For PM Steels

There are many established post-processing steps possible after sintering. A problem arises if attempting to introduce the effect of the post-processing into the fatigue assessment. The applied post-processing will be a further degree of freedom in addition to the density, sintering temperature and chemical composition. That means, in practice, it is not possible to test all relevant combinations. Therefore, the industry needs a correction model to introduce the beneficial effect of rolling, shot peening, nitriding etc. Moreover, the correction model should be harmonized with the formulation of the FKM guideline to spread the acceptance of PM steels under design engineers and material scientists. The present paper gives an overview about existing data and summarizes the existing results to a model which covers 9 common post-processing steps in the PM industry.
