Multilayer Gradient PACVD Coating On Cemented Carbides

Abstract

Coated cemented carbides currently represent 80-90% of the cutting inserts manufacturing due to the unique combination of wear resistance and toughness as well as the possibility of forming complex shapes. One of the most modern technology of surface engineering is Plasma Assisted Chemical Vapour Deposition, PACVD which allows low temperature deposition of hard surface layers on the surface of various materials. In this paper deposition of multilayer gradient PACVD coating on the surface of WC-Co cemented carbides is described. Multilayer gradient coating system consists of TiN layer, gradient layer of TiN + TiCN and layer of TiCN. Characterisation of consolidated samples prior to the coating deposition as well as evaluation of tribological and mechanical properties of the coated samples have been carried out. On the basis of conducted research the conclusions on the interaction and compatibility of the applied coating and the cemented carbide are brought.
