Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) is a powder bed additive manufacturing technology that allows the production of fully dense metal parts using 3D CAD data as digital information and taking advantage of melting thin layers of metal powder. This technology allows the solidification of unique microstructures thanks to the fast cooling of the scan tracks. In this study the effect of the introduction of nickel on the microstructure and the mechanical properties of aluminium components produced by DMLS has been investigated. It is already know that glass forming elements, such as nickel, bring to an increase of the mechanical properties of rapidly solidified Al-Si alloys (102 - 104 K/s). In this work, the building parameters have been optimised by the Taguchi statistical approach using the density values as quality factors. With the selected parameters, samples for mechanical testing have been built and characterized.
