Acoustic resonance testing (ART) is a relatively new NDT technology, which is especially well suited for all kinds of sintered parts in mass production. ART is a comparative method for quality assessment, which allows testing of the full volume of a part, within short cycle time. The presentation explains the preconditions of the method, its functional principle and its implementation into hard- and software, and the important influence factors on practical test setup. These cover the selection of an appropriate sound excitation method, the characteristics of the test setup such as vibrational isolation or performance check, the impact of the testing sequence of the parts on the applicability of drift compensation and thus on defect sensitivity, and the choice of suitable assessment features. Application examples for PM and MIM parts are given.
