In the world of powder compacting, computer-systems have been endemic for decades. In the nineteen eighties, the change from simple mechanical and rudimentary controlled hydraulics started. Today, state-of-the-art controls allow advanced programming possibilities via human-machine interface resulting in capable production runs. Monitoring of the machine movements is widely used to assure a faultless production. Today the term “Industry 4.0” is one of the latest buzzwords. The question is “what’s behind the jargon?” Are there opportunities utilizing the “internet of things” to improve production? What opportunities does Industry 4.0 create in support of part making in powder metallurgy? DORST Technologies, as a leading manufacturer of capable press systems, is focused on this next development. Implementation is already occurring, and many options are in development for the benefit of part making. This paper presents options and visions of the application of Industry 4.0 in the powder compaction process and the possible benefits.
