Connector blocks used in the Gripple wire joining system are manufactured using diecasting, the internal cavities being formed by mould tool inserts. To facilitate the rapid evaluation of new design concepts, a series of tool inserts were manufactured using direct metal laser sintering, with up to 12 unique designs produced in a single build. Post build finishing was then performed to produce the surface finish required for the die-casting process. This dramatically reduced the lead times associated with obtaining tool inserts compared to traditional machining.
