Gas Recovery and Recycle Limited (GR2L), a cleantech company headquartered in Horley, UK, has secured a contract to install its point of use argon recycling system, ArgonØ, at metal powder producer Metalysis, based in Rotherham, UK.

Originally developed to support the solar photovoltaics and microelectronics market, GR2L’s patented ArgonØ system allows manufacturers to recover and recycle argon gas at the point of use, significantly reducing both carbon emissions and operational costs. The project with Metalysis is said to mark a strategic step towards GR2L’s expansion into advanced manufacturing and the materials processing sector.

Metalysis uses argon to create an inert atmosphere throughout its production process and across all of its reactors, and was seeking to further its sustainability practices with the addition of GR2L’s argon recycling system.

The ArgonØ will result in recycling 95% of the argon used at Metalysis, saving around 350 tonnes of argon each year. The reduction in the energy used to process and transport argon will reportedly mean annual savings for Metalysis of 1000 tonnes of Scope 3 CO2.

According to the company, each tonne of argon purchased includes a minimum of 2-4 tonnes of Scope 3 CO2 equivalent. The ArgonØ recycling system has an energy footprint of less than 10% of conventional gas recycling systems.
