EPMA Objectives

Promoting the European PM Industry

One of the EPMA’s key objectives is the promotion of PM technology and in particular the promotion of EPMA members.

Trade-Fair Exhibitions

The EPMA actively promotes the benefits of using PM technology to End User target markets through attendance at selected End User trade shows, seminars and workshops. During the last twelve months we have attended End User exhibitions, made presentations for End Users and distributed new promotional literature at a number of industry-related trade shows.

Promotional activities are combined with the distribution of key Powder Metallurgy reference sources, such as the ‘Introduction to’ range of booklets. The scope of Powder Metallurgy related literature covers many industry sectors, such as Conventional PM Sintering, Metal Injection Moulding, Hot Isostatic Pressing and Additive Manufacturing.

EPMA Website

The EPMA has one of the world’s most significant PM related Web sites. The EPMA website is a key element in our promotional efforts and is regularly revised and updated. It includes a member directory, a directory of PM components and a section on the PM process. With over 82,000 visits to the site per year, epma.com is one of the world’s key online resources for PM information. The EPMA Members Directory is a searchable database of all EPMA Member companies and organisations, providing company profiles and product listings for potential customers.

International Spotlight on Powder Metallurgy

The International Spotlight on Powder Metallurgy is a promotional platform for highlighting the capabilities and performance of using Powder Metal components to provide innovative solutions to new and existing industrial applications.

The International Spotlight on Powder Metallurgy literature provides comprehensive and relevant case study material to raise awareness of the capabilities of PM, especially to end users.

The EPMA is an international trade Association representing manufacturers of all types of PM products, suppliers of materials and equipment, end users of PM components as well as research institutions and individuals who have an interest in PM.

Established as a non-profit organisation in 1989, the EPMA acts as the voice of the European PM industry at an international level so we collaborate with a range of organisations to address issues of strategic importance to the competitiveness of our members and industry as a whole.

Sectoral and Working Groups

The EPMA can be divided into two main areas, Sectoral and Working Groups. Working Groups cover cross sector issues and can be defined as:

The six Sectoral Groups represent the main PM industry subsectors, which cover the majority of the PM industry:

European Powder Metallurgy Institutes

Coordinated by industry and academic personnel these groups cover a wide range of activities and topics whose focus, relevance and follow up is driven by the members of the group. They provide an excellent opportunity for networking, information gathering and lobbying.

REACH Legislation

The REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) legislation, which came into force on June 1st 2007, has been an important issue for European PM Companies for the last few years and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. As such is the importance of this legislation to the PM industry, the EPMA diverted it resources to ensure that it became a leading industry hub for information on the subject. The EPMA actively works with the Brussels based lobbying organisation, Eurometaux, as well as several other industry trade associations to continue to provide business critical REACH information. To assist with the dissemination of this information to EPMA Members, the EPMA coordinated special REACH Workshops on forthcoming REACH legislation and deadlines. The Brussels based REACH Workshops, attracted over 200 delegates and provided crucial material about this complex subject. The EPMA is a catalyst for activity with REACH agencies in Europe to ensure that the special requirements of metal powders are recognised and then acted upon across the PM Industry.

The EPMA recognises the importance of Training and Education, with significant effort dedicated to continuing these activities for the benefit of the future PM Industry.

Thanks to the unique combination of high level industrial specialists and academics all the courses delivered by the EPMA provide unrivalled insights into the practical capabilities and applications of powder metallurgy (PM) process.

Education & Training

The EPMA has long recognised the need to provide education and training material for use in Universities, the PM industry, and end-user industries. We have been involved in a series of activities producing publications, videos, the extensive online resource for end user designers and engineers Design for PM and we have also worked on the development of the Global PM Property Database.

EPMA Seminars

The EPMA has held a range of seminars covering different aspects of PM Technology. These courses are particularly beneficial to technical and managerial personal looking for a more comprehensive understanding of the PM process.

EPMA organised seminars enable an excellent learning opportunity for engineers and scientists with an interest in the PM process.

More information on EPMA seminars can be found on the Seminar website.

EPMA Summer Schools

The EPMA Summer Schools have been designed to offer participants from all parts of the EU an advanced teaching of PM’s advantages and limitations by some of the leading academic and industrial personnel in Europe. It is also a rare opportunity to stimulate direct technical discussions by young scientists and engineers who are interested in broadening their knowledge through interaction with senior figures in the PM industry.

More information on EPMA Summer Schools can be found on the Summer School website.

EPMA Thesis Competition

This competition, operated on an annual basis, is designed to stimulate and encourage young researchers in PM. It offers financial prizes to the winners who also have the opportunity to present their work to the EPMA congres and receive a plaque from the EPMA President.

More information on the EPMA Thesis Competition can be found on the Thesis Competition page on this website on the Thesis Competition website (www.epma.com/thesiscompetition).

Trade Association Services

Through the eight working and sectoral groups, the EPMA coordinates a range of activities designed to help the success of its members across the PM supply chain, which include:

  • Benchmarking and Statistics – The collection and dissemination of PM industry statistics is a key EPMA service. Based on feedback from EPMA Members, the breadth and depth of the questions increases year-on-year, thus enhancing the value of this unique service, which is a prerequisite for a number of quality certifications. Contributing members receive figures relating to their industry sector, along with statistics reports providing detailed analyses of the European PM industry, combined with reviews of global trends and figures from end-user industries. We also undertake an annual benchmarking service on a confidential basis which covers market, production and technical activities.
  • Quality Certification – The EPMA maintains the service advertising members’ quality accreditation on the EPMA website.
  • International Standards – The EPMA continues to support the work of ISO TC119 and other standards activities.

Technology Development

We undertake a key role in the co-ordination of various government or industry funded research and development programmes. These range from short term specific programmes to wide ranging thematic networks running for several years. In all cases they are designed by members to meet their needs and help to improve the competitiveness and capability of the European PM industry. The outcomes of some of these projects have been converted into ISO standards such as ISO 5755 on PM Material Specification. New standards for metal injection moulding have been put in place as the result of a Thematic network funded by the EU and co-ordinated by the EPMA.

Euro PM Congress & Exhibitions

We organise the annual series of Euro PM Conferences along with all PM World Congresses in Europe. The annual Euro PM Congress & Exhibitions are the pinnacle of the PM calendar, which attracts industry leaders, decision-makers, respected academics and a whole host of PM related companies and personnel from right across the supply chain to the 4-day event. Held in a different country and congress centre each year, the Euro PM Congress & Exhibition is a blend of Technical Content and Business Networking opportunities for all aspects of the PM industry.

Technical Programme

The Technical Programme consists of over 250 oral presentations from well-respected academics and industry figureheads from throughout Europe on a range of Powder Metallurgy sectors, including: Additive Manufacturing, Functional Materials, Hard Materials, Hot Isostatic Pressing, New Materials, Processes and Applications, Metal Injection Moulding and Press & Sinter.

Industry Exhibition

The Exhibition which runs in parallel with the Congress offers an excellent opportunity for international suppliers to the PM industry to network with new and existing customers from the powder metallurgy and associated sectors.
