
The Uppsala University node of WISE Additive has been inaugurated and is now part of Sweden’s national research infrastructure supporting advances in Additive Manufacturing.
The Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE) is a long-term programme supporting research and infrastructure within sustainable materials science. Through the WISE Research Technology Platforms, new equipment has been delivered to Chalmers University of Technology, Linköping University and Uppsala University. Together, the three nodes form the WISE Additive RTP, aimed at strengthening Sweden’s national research capacity in Additive Manufacturing.
Uppsala University’s AM@Å Lab in the Ångström Laboratory has expanded its facilities with equipment for metal powder production and characterisation, as well as tools for the post-processing of additively manufactured metal components. A new micro-CT machine provides the ability to perform detailed internal analyses of components without destructive testing.
The inauguration opened with an introduction by Professor Cecilia Persson, Scientific Director of WISE Additive, who presented the role of the Uppsala node within the national infrastructure. The programme also included equipment demonstrations and presentations of ongoing additive manufacturing research at Uppsala University.
Invited speaker Professor Iain Todd from the University of Sheffield, UK, offered an overview of international developments in metal Additive Manufacturing, including advances in powder recovery, reuse, and recycling.
The ceremony concluded with a ribbon-cutting led by Vice-Rector Charlotte Platzer Björkman, together with Professor Olle Eriksson, Co-Director of WISE at Uppsala University. A guided tour of the upgraded laboratory facilities followed.
The new infrastructure is intended to strengthen Uppsala University’s research capabilities and enable deeper collaboration with partners in academia and industry. In the long term, the investment is expected to support technological progress and sustainability within Additive Manufacturing.
