
‘Powder metallurgy in stormy times’ is the motto of this year’s Hagen Symposium in Germany. Like a sailing ship in a stormy ocean, the powder metallurgy industry is also experiencing turbulent times. The world has been characterised by numerous changes and challenges for a number of years now and continues to be so; climate change, political unrest and technological progress are just some of the waves that need to be dealt with. But much like a sailing ship faces the challenges of the storm, powder metallurgy, with its dedicated, creative minds and many tools, has the ability to adapt, evolve and utilise the conditions of the environment to move forward.
The 42nd Hagen Symposium, which will take place on 28/29 November 2024 in the Townhall of Hagen, Germany, will look back from the past to topics in the current turbulent times that have the potential to put powder metallurgy on a stable course for the future and keep it there – on the basis of great experience, with a lot of creativity and the courage to innovate.
The lecture programme covers a wide range of topics and offers the audience the opportunity to learn about new developments in the various areas of powder metallurgy and the underlying trends in the economic environment. In the field of hard metals, the 100-year history will be looked back on, but new developments involving modern tools such as simulation will also be presented.Other topical issues will be addressed and highlighted at this year’s Hagen symposium.These include, in particular, the topics of energy transition, raw material shortages and artificial intelligence, which will be addressed in interesting contributions along the process chain from powder to component.New technologies and manufacturing options such as electro-sintering forging (FAST-ESF) and new aspects of additive manufacturing will also feature in this year’s programme. There will also be contributions on important, traditional and promising materials such as magnetic materials as well as materials for medical technology and the mobility sector, which are produced using powder metallurgy and show part of the current and future diversity of powder metallurgy. The Hagen Symposium is thus once again proving to be a central element of the powder metallurgy industry in terms of the exchange of ideas on exciting topics and the start of new developments.
This year’s honour oft he SKAUPY lecture will be given to Prof. Dr. Martin Bram from Forschungszentrum Jülich. As part of his energy research, he will be focussing on material synthesis and manufacturing processes based on metal powders. This field of application is another topic that is highly relevant for the future of powder metallurgy and provides promising approaches for new developments.
Traditionally, this year’s symposium will once again be complemented by an exhibition of companies and institutions active in the field of powder metallurgy. A new feature of this year’s Hagen Symposium will be the poster-session by our young researchers, in which they will present their research work. These posters will not only be on display as part of the exhibition. Selected posters will be presented to the auditorium in a short presentation. The exhibition will also be complemented by the poster presentation of the expert groups of the PM Joint Committee, which will present themselves to the entire audience.
