EPMA Newsletter June 2025

Dear Members, 

A lot has happened since our last newsletter—new faces, new ideas, and exciting plans taking shape for the months ahead. 

In mid-May, we renewed our Board and Council. We now count 22 companies on the Council, including 7 new members. A warm welcome to them, and sincere thanks to those who have completed their mandate. We're also proud to share a historic first for EPMA: Adeline Riou has been elected as our new President, becoming the first woman to hold this position. Many of you already know Steven Moseley, who steps in as our new Treasurer. A heartfelt thank you goes to Ralf Carlström, our outgoing President, for his dedicated leadership over the past six years. 

Looking ahead, EuroPM2025 in Glasgow is well on track. This year's congress will feature some fresh additions, including "Technical Briefs", and three "PM for Beginners" sessions, up from two last year. New Special Interest Seminars (SIS) are also planned—covering aerospace, automotive, and EHQS, alongside our regular sector group SIS. As always, the congress will be a key moment to exchange, learn, and connect. 

We also have a fresh face joining our team: a young graphic designer will be starting with us in June, bringing creativity and a new perspective to our communications. EPMA now maintains an encouraging gender balance within its core team—6 men and 4 women. 

Earlier this year, the Aerospace Seminar was a great success. We're now actively preparing the next sector event, the Medical Seminar, scheduled for later this year. Looking further ahead to 2026, we're considering seminars on energy and automotive, two strategic topics for our industry. 

To all our members, thank you for your continued support and engagement. We look forward to seeing many of you again in Glasgow this September!

📰 EPMA General Assembly 2025 – Key Takeaways 

The EPMA Annual General Assembly was held on 15 May 2025 in a hybrid format, both in Brussels (hosted by CLEPA) and online via Microsoft Teams. Below are the highlights relevant to members and stakeholders: 

🏛 Leadership Update 

• Adeline Riou (Aubert & Duval) was elected President of EPMA. 

• Steven Moseley (Hilti) was confirmed as Treasurer. 

• A new Council was elected, with 22 companies approved by majority vote. 

💼 Financial Outlook 

• 2024 closed with a €96k surplus, reinforcing EPMA's strong financial standing. 

• The 2025 budget forecasts a €23k deficit due to increased staffing and marketing needs. 

• 2026 is projected to return to surplus (+€12k), with a focus on congress revenue and EU projects.

The Euro PM2025 Congress & Exhibition will take place will take place in Glasgow, UK from 14 to 17 September 2025. 

Glasgow is a vibrant city known for its rich industrial heritage, stunning Victorian and art nouveau architecture, and dynamic arts scene. Situated on the River Clyde, it's Scotland's largest city and a hub for innovation, culture, and education. Home to world-class museums, such as the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Riverside Museum, Glasgow also boasts a lively music and culinary scene. The city is famed for its friendly locals and warm hospitality, making it an inviting destination for visitors. 

Euro PM2025 will be held at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC), a leading conference and events centre renowned for its state-of-the-art facilities and picturesque location on the banks of the River Clyde. With its versatile spaces and modern facilities, the SEC offers a dynamic setting for events, with an impressive mix of architecture, surrounded by numerous hotels. 

The Scottish Event Campus (SEC) is easily accessible via Glasgow International Airport (GLA), located just about 13 km from the venue. Euro PM2025 Programme  

This year we received a total of 235 abstracts (208 Oral presentations and 27 Poster presentations). The very high-quality of the submitted papers allowed the TPC members to create a high number of sessions (45 sessions on 3 days) covering a wide range of topics within powder metallurgy. 

The technical programme will be enhanced by 10 Special Interest Seminars and 6 Sectoral meetings. Full details of the programme can be found here. 

The Euro PM2025 Plenary Session will take place on the morning of Monday, 14 September. The session will begin with a welcome address by The Rt Hon The Lord Provost of Glasgow, along with the two Congress Chairs. 

This will be followed by a presentation on EPMA activities by Dr Lionel Aboussouan and an overview of the latest trends in Powder Metallurgy, presented by the new EPMA President, Mrs Adeline Riou. 

We will then welcome two distinguished keynote speakers, who will share their insights on key industry challenges and future opportunities:
🔹 Prof. Gioia Falcone (University of Glasgow) – Sustainable Energy
🔹 Mr. David Stewart (Rolls-Royce) – HIP Technology for Nuclear Power Plant Applications 

The session will also feature the winner of the Thesis Competition, who will be invited to the Congress and give a short presentation on their work. 

Finally, the Plenary Session will provide an opportunity to recognise the recipients of the Distinguished Service Award (DSA), Fellowship Awards, Sustainability Award, and the 2025 Keynote Paper Awards. 

During the coffee and lunch breaks, you can attend our usual Industry corners presentations and campfire meetings, open to all Congress participants. The call for topics is still open until 18 June 2025.

New this year, we are introducing the Technical Briefs: 10-minute presentations on Powder Metallurgy (PM), including a short Q&A, to be held on the PM Forum Stage on Wednesday, 17 September 2025. These sessions offer a platform to share cutting-edge PM research, highlight industrial achievements, or present technical and economic analyses of PM processes.
The call for topics is open until 5 June 2025. More information is available here. 

As in previous years, you will also have the opportunity to attend the "PM for Beginners" lecture by Dr Vlad Kruzhanov, open to all participants on Tuesday, 16 September.

START passes the second EU assessment and enters Year 4 

Good news from the Horizon Europe START project! This initiative, focused on developing tellurium-free thermoelectric materials from mine waste sulphides (tetrahedrites), has successfully completed the funding agency's evaluation following its second reporting period. With the initial devices now almost ready to be unveiled, the project has commenced its crucial final year. EPMA will be intensifying its efforts in leading dissemination, communication, and stakeholder engagement during these last 12 months, with a variety of events on the horizon. 

On March 18, 2025, the sixth free START webinar focused on "Innovative TE devices from EU Research and Innovation." This event featured presentations from members of both the START and THERMOS consortia, demonstrating our collaborative efforts. While the projects employ different solutions (tetrahedrites and magnesium-antimony), their shared goal is the same: both projects aim to create devices using thermoelectric materials that do not contain tellurium, reducing Europe's reliance on this element. THERMOS is nearing its completion. The program included presentations from our industrial partners TEGnology and RGS Development, as well as one from the THERMOS coordinator. The footage is available on YouTube and on START's website. 

After the annual General Assembly in June (hosted by partner RGS Developments in Alkmaar, the Netherlands), a workshop is scheduled for the European Conference on Thermoelectrics in Nancy, France, this September, just before the EuroPM. Additional events are in preparation, including a training workshop and a final workshop, both to be held closer to the project's conclusion on May 31, 2026. 

As in previous years, START will feature a dedicated booth at Euro PM2025 and will participate in the Critical Raw Materials events organized by EPMA at the congress.

RESQTOOL publishes its second newsletter and awaits the first assessment 

RESQTOOL publishes its second newsletter and awaits the first assessment 

The Horizon Europe project RESQTOOL, coordinated by EPMA and launched in December 2023, is dedicated to hardmetal recycling. Its primary objective is to improve the circularity of tungsten and cobalt, two important critical raw materials. In its inaugural year, the project has achieved significant milestones: it classified scrap types, developed an optimized coding strategy, established a UNFC database, and is actively upscaling processing lines. A full description of the hardmetal supply chain was recently finalized; this will be instrumental in evaluating the sustainability of both existing processes and the enhanced RESQTOOL solution. 

In June, the meeting organised by our partner Tikomet in the Finnish city of Jyväskylä, will also be occasion for a review by the project officer from the funding agency about the activity in the first 15 months, that we hope will be positive. 

In its second newsletter, published in May 2025, the RESQTOOL consortium put forth a proposal to reclassify used hardmetal tools, presently considered as waste. This reclassification aims to address a regulatory barrier that currently impedes recycling. Further details are available in the newsletter, which can be downloaded from the project website. Its efforts for labelling will also be taken to the next ISO meeting, as in perspective this could become a standard for recycling and other scopes. 

The project had a presence at the Metal Show and TIB in Bucharest in May with a dedicated booth. Another booth will be available at Euro PM2025, where you can learn more about the project's ongoing activities. 

RESQTOOL is also organizing Critical Raw Materials activities during the Glasgow congress, in conjunction with other projects. REPTiS joins forces with other projects

The EPMA-coordinated REPTiS project is advancing significantly. This initiative is focused on scaling up a chemical process for producing titanium alloy powders from Ukrainian ilmenite ore, thereby avoiding the need for traditional melting and atomization. Current work involves activities at the mining and processing site in Ukraine, alongside the crucial task of defining the demonstrators that will be manufactured using the powders produced.

During EuroPM, REPTiS intends to host one of the Special Interest Seminars as a panel discussion, exploring the topic of “PM and Critical Raw Materials: Issues and Opportunities.” There will also be speaking slots in a dedicated session on the Exhibition stage, specially branded as the “Critical Raw Materials Corner.” These events will offer valuable opportunities for collaboration with other projects and for connecting with relevant stakeholders present in Glasgow. Additionally, the project will be involved in the workshop organized by the RESQTOOL project on Sunday, September 14 (see the corresponding chapter). 

The initial issue of the REPTiS newsletter was released in April 2025. It provides a wealth of information on project themes and the consortium’s methodology and is available for download from the project website. A second issue is anticipated during the summer. 

REPTiS project has been represented at AM Forum in Berlin on the dates of March 17-18, 2025, Europe’s leading user conference for industrial AM. Staged under the motto “Boosting AM applications in industrial production”, the conference brought together more than 750 AM users, enthusiasts, decision makers and experts across industries. Important outcome of REPTiS is Titanium for AM and MIM from alternative sources with alternative processes that has been promoted to a large audience during the event.

EuroAM

Thhe Aerospace Seminar 2024 has been successfully conducted at Sandvik Coromant Facilities in Sweden on the dates of 20-21 May. More than 40 participants joined in interesting presentations and discussions, as well as a site visit to Sandvik Additive powder production facilities.

EuroFM  

The Functional Materials group is spearheading the organization of the Special Interest Seminar (SIS) on Functional Materials for Euro PM2025, with a dedicated focus on rare earth-based permanent magnets. Our team is also providing crucial support for other related SIS events, especially those in the energy sector. 

Our upcoming Sectoral Group meeting at the congress promises an insightful presentation by M. Bram of FZ Jülich, who will provide a comprehensive review of FAST/SPS technologies, widely recognized for their effectiveness in fabricating functional materials. A discussion on future opportunities linked to its use will follow. 

We are excited to announce that we have begun revising the “Introduction to Functional Materials“ booklet and are eager to include fresh perspectives. If you have any innovative case studies, please get in touch with EPMA to contribute to the new edition. 

We extend a warm welcome to the two newest additions to our Steering Committee: Badrinath Veluri (Grundfos, and REIA – The Global Rare Earth Industry Association) and Alessandro Fais (EPoS Technologies). Their diverse backgrounds and extensive networks will undoubtedly enhance the group’s reach and expertise. 

EuroHM

EuroHM group is having a meeting in Reutte during the Pansee Seminar on 3rd of June in the Cube. This is an open meeting where everyone interested in EuroHM is kindly invited to join the meeting. The agenda contains discussions on current and future projects of EPMA and a keynote presentation by Thomas Klünsner from MCL with the title of “Cyclic high temperature plastic deformation properties of hardmetals with different contents of secondary raw material” 

EuroMIM 

EuroMIM’s Trend and Statistics survey, recently completed, confirms a market slowdown in 2024, with a second consecutive drop of approximately 6% in Europe, again below the 500M€ mark. We are pleased that participation was strong, with 18 MIM producers contributing. Many of these, being members, also participated in the Benchmarking exercise. Some initial results were presented at the EPMA General Assembly a few weeks ago, and these trends will be a key discussion point at the MIM Sectoral Group meeting in Glasgow, at Euro PM2025. 

For Euro PM2025 in Glasgow, EuroMIM is organizing a Special Interest Seminar designed to offer “scenario” contributions relevant to the MIM community. The focus will be on broader, related topics rather than solely MIM-specific technical details. Further information will be published on the Euro PM2025 website in the coming weeks. 

Work is now beginning on refreshing the content of the “Introduction to MIM” brochure, which will include our updated MIM Roadmap to 2030. Additionally, we are planning a series of short videos about MIM as a new way to engage, especially our younger colleagues. 

We also foresee a MIM seminar in late spring in 2026, possible joint with a Sustainability in PM seminar. More news soon!

EuroPress&Sinter 

We are pleased to announce that Dimitris Chasoglou from Höganäs AB is the new chair and a new member of the EuroPress&Sinter Steering Committee. Dimitris assumes the role previously held by Caroline Larsson and will now share the co-chairing duties with Cesar Molins. Concurrently, Christian Gierl-Mayer of TU Wien will join the Steering Committee, contributing his valuable academic expertise to the group. 

Recent Press&Sinter surveys confirm the weak performance observed in last years, with the exception of a rebound from the COVID-related halt. A roughly 6% decrease in the production of powders for PM was accompanied by an even steeper 7.5% drop in press&sinter revenues; responses are also indicating a continuing negative outlook. 

The Benchmarking exercise for 2024 performance will launch in the coming weeks and is scheduled for completion over the summer. 

At the upcoming congress, the Euro Press&Sinter Steering Committee is preparing a Special Interest Seminar and supporting others, such as the one for Automotive, with a focus on application sectors. 

The Club Project on modelling of Induction Hardening, InducSim, proposed by RWTH Aachen, is still seeking expressions of interest. We need participation from part makers, powder makers, and equipment makers to reach the minimum number of partners to share costs. This project addresses the complex challenge of predicting microstructure and properties from process parameters and geometry, alongside the critical issue of crack initiation. Training webinar 

EPMA's second training session, "Powder Metallurgy in the Green Transition, Session 2," took place on March 20, 2025. This event welcomed 18 trainees who attended three insightful lectures: 

• "Sustainability of Additive Manufacturing" by Benjamin Haller (AM Academy) 

• "Recycling of Hardmetals" by Teemu Karhumaa (Tikomet Oy/RESQTOOL Project) 

• "Soft Magnetic Composites" by Dirk Zepp (Höganäs AB) 

Participants completed an evaluation test, leading to the issuance of certificates acknowledging their achievement. Recordings of the lectures and PDF copies of the slides were provided after the session. 

Be sure to take advantage of the next opportunity to learn how PM contributes to a sustainable future. The next session is likely to occur in early 2026! 

EPMA Young Engineers Days 2025 

This two-day event helps to raise awareness and interest in Powder Metallurgy careers amongst young engineers. EPMA Young Engineers Days 2025 will take place on 15 & 16 September 2025, at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) in Glasgow, UK during the Euro PM2025 Congress & Exhibition. 

The event includes lectures on the basics of PM, access to the Euro PM2025 exhibition area, the plenary session on Monday morning, coffee breaks, lunches, Posters reception, a networking dinner on Monday 15 September and one hotel night (double occupancy room) on Monday. 

Optional: Young Engineers participants can attend the Euro PM2025 technical sessions on Wednesday 17 September for just €100!
