Introduction
Dear Members,
As we move into the final quarter of the year, it’s a good moment to reflect on our recent activities and look ahead to what’s next for the EPMA community.
Last month, we gathered in Glasgow for the EuroPM2025 Congress, which brought together around 650 participants – the largest European event dedicated to Additive Manufacturing and Powder Metallurgy materials and technologies, from metal powders to LPBF, MBJ, DED, HIP, MIM, Press & Sinter, SPS and other processes. The event stood out for its diversity of sessions, rich discussions, and lively atmosphere. In addition to our traditional programme, this year introduced more parallel activities than before — including some Technical Brief session, a Women in PM session, and a round table on Critical Raw Materials. The Special Interest Seminars (SIS) also took a new direction, focusing on high-level perspectives that sparked meaningful exchanges across the industry. And of course, the Congress Dinner was a real highlight — a memorable evening celebrating two birthdays in great company.
As we enter the last months of 2025, our focus now turns to sector-specific and online initiatives. We are pleased to launch our first “PM for Medical” seminar, as well as a brand-new webinar on statistics, opening new ways to share knowledge and connect with our members.
The membership fees for 2026 are currently being sent out, following the same policy as in previous years: payments received before 30 January 2026 will benefit from 2025 rates, while those received afterwards will include a 4% increase.
Looking ahead to next year, we’re excited to announce two free seminars on Automotive and Energy, made possible through a partnership with the 3D Print exhibition — both with calls for papers now open.
And of course, preparations are already underway for the EuroPM2026 Congress in Budapest. The call for papers will open on 5 November, and exhibition bookings are already available.

Euro PM2025 Congress & Exhibition Report
The European Powder Metallurgy Association (EPMA) successfully hosted Euro PM2025, its annual Congress & Exhibition, in Glasgow, Scotland, from 14–17 September 2025 at the modern Scottish Event Campus (SEC).
This was the first time the event visited Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city, renowned for its warm hospitality, rich cultural life, and iconic architecture. Over 650 participants from 39 countries attended, representing the entire powder metallurgy (PM) supply chain – from industry leaders and researchers to academics and end-users.
A Global Technical Platform
The technical programme featured over 235 oral and poster presentations across 40 sessions. The programme was steered by the Technical Programme Committee (TPC), chaired by Asst. Professor Dr Raquel de Oro (TU Wien, Austria) and Dr Gian Pietro De Gaudenzi (OMCD TEK HUB SpA). EPMA thanked TPC members with a dinner reception at the Citation Restaurant in the heart of Glasgow.
Highlights included:
- Plenary Session chaired by Prof Herbert Danninger and Dr Steven Moseley, with a welcome by the Right Honourable Lord Provost of Glasgow, updates from Dr Lionel Aboussouan (EPMA Executive Director) and Mrs Adeline Riou (EPMA President), and two keynote lectures by Mr. David Stewart (Rolls Royce) and Prof. Gioia Falcone (University of Glasgow).
- Awards Ceremony, recognising excellence in sustainability, research, and service to the PM community, including the EPMA Thesis Competition, Fellowship and Distinguished Service Awards and the Keynote Paper Awards.
Exhibition & Networking
The Exhibition hosted 56 companies, showcasing the latest PM technologies, materials, and services. The Industry Corner and dedicated technical session for exhibition visitors provided valuable opportunities for knowledge exchange and business development.
Networking highlights included:
- Welcome Reception on Sunday evening to start the event.
- Projects Reception (supported by REPTiS and RESQTOOL) on Monday evening, with the Peter Brewin Poster Award presented this year to Mr Masaaki Eida from Sumitomo Electric Sintered Alloy Ltd, for research on “Development Of Soft Magnetic Composites Core For Axial Flux Motor Using Ultra-thin, High-withstand-voltage Insulation Coating Technology”
- The Annual Gala Dinner on Tuesday at the iconic Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, where delegates enjoyed private gallery access, live organ music, and a three-course dinner in a spectacular setting.
Supporting the Next Generation
Running in parallel, the Young Engineers Programme welcomed 10 students for a two-day programme of lectures, networking activities, and technical session access. The PM for Beginners course also introduced newcomers to the fundamentals of powder metallurgy.

Euro PM2026 Congress & Exhibition

Euro PM2026 Congress – Call for Papers The Call for Papers will open on 5 November 2025 for this all-strand event. European Projects

START is in its last year
The Horizon Europe START project, focused on developing tellurium-free thermoelectric materials from mine waste sulphides (tetrahedrites), is now coming closer to its conclusion (May 2026). The first devices have been assembled and are under testing. At the European Conference on Thermoelectrics 2025, held in Nancy from 9th to 12th September, the partners started to show their results, that include the successful fabrication of a thermoelectric material with outstanding properties (the value for the factor of merit zT appears to be beyond expectation, much higher than the material properties found in literature). A TE module made with it was shown in the exhibition. The project attracted a lot of attention, also because a workshop was organised inside the conference programme, an extended round table with seven experts on the topic “How to take TE to the market by academia-industry collaboration?”, that was attended by a large number of participants.

As always, START was present in Euro PM2025, with a booth and by taking part as speaker and panellist (roles taken by the coordinator F. Neves) in all the Critical Raw Materials sessions organised, starting from the RESQTOOL/BLOOM Clustering Workshop on Sunday 14th September, and then continuing on Monday afternoon with the Critical Raw Materials Corner session in the exhibition, and the Round Table “PM and Critical Raw Materials: Issues and Opportunities”.

Additional events are in preparation: the participation in a side event of the Raw Materials Week in Brussels (21st November), and later a training workshop and a final workshop, both to be held closer to the project’s conclusion.

RESQTOOL passed its first assessment and works for standardisation of labelling

The Horizon Europe project RESQTOOL, coordinated by EPMA and launched in December 2023, dedicated to hardmetal recycling, that means to improve the circularity of tungsten and cobalt, two important critical raw materials, has completed its first reporting period and passed the evaluation by the funding agency HaDEA (also through the Review Meeting hosted in June by our Finnish partner GTP OY, formerly Tikomet, in Jyväskylä). The work done until now has been considered good and the consortium is now pushing forward to achieve its goals: improving the Zinc Reclaim process, and developing the bio-derived chemical leaching.

The RESQTOOL project 4th meeting in Jyväskylä, Finland, became the occasion for the official review with our Project Officer and Project Evaluator.
On the dissemination side, the project worked hard to prepare, together with the other Horizon Europe project BLOOM, the Clustering Workshop that was held in Glasgow just before Euro PM2025, on Sunday 14th September, titled “Primary and Secondary Raw Materials: how can Europe reduce scarcity risks and boost the Green Transition”. It featured four keynote presentations by policy experts for EU, UK and US (and more), ten project presentations on the contributions of Research and Innovation towards the mitigation of the Critical Raw Materials issues, and a final Round Table moderated by M. Komac of INTRAW. Considering the festive day, and the call of the city of Glasgow for pre-Congress tourism, the participation was satisfactory, and the discussions were particularly interesting. In Euro PM2025, the project had a booth and also supported part of the poster reception, when the coordinator K. Boz of EPMA briefly addressed the participants explaining the scope of RESQTOOL and reminding the booth.
On Monday afternoon, RESQTOOL took part in the “Critical Raw Materials Corner”, in the PM Forum stage in the Exhibition. Again, J. Szalatkiewicz gave a pitch to the audience. And later, Jakub also took part as a panellist in the Special Interest Seminar Round Table “PM and Critical Raw Materials: Issues and Opportunities”

RESQTOOL’s efforts for labelling were also taken to the next ISO TC119 meeting, that was held in conjunction with the congress in Glasgow: it was well accepted, so our coding could really become a standard for recycling and more.
RESQTOOL will take part in the Raw Materials Week in Brussels in November, where T. Karhumaa of GTP will speak in a clustering side event organised by the project REESOURCE on Friday 21st November 2025, and will be present again the following week at the Hagen conference organised by the German Fachverband Pulvermetallurgie.
Other initiatives will be announced in the next days.

REPTiS progresses and visibility in Euro PM

The REPTiS project is focused on scaling up a chemical process, already patented by the partner Velta to produce titanium alloy powders using Ukrainian ilmenite ore, also eliminating the need for the conventional melting and atomization steps. It is part of the EU strategy of establishing Critical Raw Materials streams to feed the supply chains for its industry from countries that pose less risks. Current efforts include work at the mining and processing site in Ukraine, that already led to the delivery of the first concentrated Ilmenite samples for further processing.
During EuroPM, REPTiS organised a booth, supported a part of the reception on Monday 15th afternoon, where B. Vicenzi shortly explained about REPTiS to the participants, but most importantly organised and took part in several sessions. I. Agote spoke about the project in a dedicated session on the Exhibition stage, named “Critical Raw Materials Corner”, that was organised by REPTiS. In the following slot, REPTiS put together a Special Interest Seminar as a panel discussion, titled “PM and Critical Raw Materials: Issues and Opportunities”. One of the panellists was C. Kukla, from REPTiS’ partner Montanuniversität Leoben. The moderator of the discussion was supposed to be E. Koumoulos of IRES, another partner of REPTiS, but unfortunately Elias had a family emergency and could not come to Glasgow, so the session was moderated by D. Yilmaz of IFE. The panellists, many from Horizon Europe projects, but not only, where representing the different facets of both communities, the PM one and the Raw Materials one.
Additionally, C. Kukla represented REPTiS in the Clustering Workshop organized by the RESQTOOL project on Sunday, September 14th (see the corresponding chapter).

EPMA for new projects
In 2025, EPMA has been very active in submitting and participating in Horizon Europe and Erasmus+ proposals. Some of you have met us during the proposals preparation and can testify the commitment in trying to secure funding for your R&D in powder metallurgy and critical raw materials. While waiting for the result of these submissions, EPMA's technical team is now already actively engaged in preparation for the new calls in 2026!

Sectoral Groups
A SIS (Special Interest Seminar) and a sectoral group meeting have been held by EuroAM at EuroPM in Glasgow. The SIS was on “Defence applications of AM”. Speakers were Dr.Evren Yasa from University of Sheffield, Fabrizio Ragusa from Nikon-SLM Solutions and Stefan Ritt from AM-3D.
In the sectoral group meeting, the activities of EuroAM were presented by the chairs Claus Aumund-Kopp and Mikail Schuisky, followed by a keynote presentation on the effects of EU policies on PM industry by Kenan Boz.
The group organised one Special Interest Seminar (SIS) on Functional Materials for Euro PM2025. Session 16 on Tuesday 16th September was in fact titled “Status and outlooks for the recycling of Rare Earth-based permanent magnets in Europe”. It was chaired by Dr José Manuel Martìn Garcia of CEIT (and member of the EuroFM Steering Committee). There were three speakers, all experts in the topic:
- “High-Performance permanent magnets and the triple paradigm: circularity, resilience and decarbonization”, Mr. Alexandre Damiens (ORANO, France)
- “Meeting Demand via Long-Loop Recovery and Separation of Rare Earths”, Mr. Thomas Kelly (Ionic Technologies, UK)
- “The Use of Hydrogen to Recycle Rare Earth Magnets”, Mr. Rob Arnold (HyProMag, UK)
The recycling of NdFeB magnets in Europe, either by the “short loop” or the “long loop”, has been well explained and represents today a reality; yet, much should be done, for example to boost the design for recycling. The topic of magnets has also been covered, together with others within the scope of FM (for instance, thermoelectrics), in addition to some technical sessions, also in the sessions dedicated to Critical Raw Materials, like the Critical Raw Materials Corner (in the Exhibition, on Monday afternoon) and the other Special Interest Seminar Session 9, the Round Table “PM and Critical Raw Materials: Issues and Opportunities”, where the moderator D. Yilmaz (IFE, Norway), N. Mancheri (EIT Raw Materials), the already mentioned J.M. Martìn Garcia and A. Damiens, and Fergal Coleman (Ionic Technologies) covered again the magnets sector. Some of the speakers also took part in the Sunday workshop organised before the congress by the projects RESQTOOL and BLOOM, also dedicated to Critical Raw Materials (see in the related chapter). Some other related speakers had been invited but had to cancel last minute. The Sectoral Group meeting at the congress, held on Monday 15th, and chaired by Dr. Sebastian Hein of Fraunhofer IFAM and Moritz Stolpe of Stolpe Consulting (the EuroFM chairs), featured in particular the presentation by Dr. M. Bram (FZ Jülich), an interesting and exhaustive review of FAST/SPS technologies, a growing sector in PM, that also generated a lively Q&A. For the next months, in addition to plan for Euro PM2026 and other EPMA events, EuroFM will continue the work on the second edition of the brochure “Intro to FM”.

EuroHM group organized a meeting in Reutte during the Plansee Seminar on 3rd of June. This was an open meeting where everyone interested in EuroHM activities were kindly invited to join the meeting. The agenda contained discussions on current and future projects of EPMA and a keynote presentation by Thomas Klünsner from MCL with the title of “Cyclic high temperature plastic deformation properties of hardmetals with different contents of secondary raw material” The Special Interest Seminar on Digital tools was followed by a high number of participants during EuroPM Congress in Glasgow. Also a sectoral group meeting has ween held with a keynote presentation by Prof. Pete Crawforthfrom AMRC-University of Sheffield with the title of “Subtractive Processes -market trends, research vision and advanced assistive technologies” 


EuroHIP has organized two special Interest Seminars and a Group meeting at the EuroPM congress in Glasgow. The SIS on Oil & Gas industry had two presentations from Ajai Sankar (University College Dublin) and Tomas Berglund (MTC Powder Solutions). An interactive session moderated by Iain Dandy has been held during the sectoral group meeting to discuss how to improve the activities of EuroHIP, followed by a keynote presentation by Victor Samarov (Synertech PM, USA) on large scale near net shape PM-HIP.


EuroMIM’s Trend and Statistics survey on the European market (presented by B. Vicenzi of EPMA), and a review on the status of “MIM in Asia and US”, by Dr. Paul Davies (IndoMIM), with interesting similarities and differences, were the heart of the discussion at the MIM Sectoral Group meeting at Euro PM2025 in Glasgow, chaired by Dr. Frank Petzoldt of Petzoldt Ingenieurbüro (and EuroMIM chair) on Wednesday 17th September morning. After that session, in the same morning, EuroMIM put together a Special Interest Seminar session, chaired by Dr. Paul A. Davies of IndoMIM, that was designed to offer “scenario” contributions, yet somewhat relevant to the MIM community. The topics touched were:
- “Ultrafast powder qualification: a segmentation and rapid characterization analysis tool using image processing of metal powder”, Mr Dimitris Kanakis (IRES, Greece)
- “Energy Costs and Competitiveness: Shaping Industrial Policy in a High Energy Prices Europe”, Ms Adina Georgescu (Eurometaux, Belgium)
Clearly, metal powder is key for the successful implementation of MIM, and the energy prices are also very important for a process comprising high temperature sintering (and gas atomisation). Next activities will focus on the new edition of the brochure “Intro to MIM” and the preparation for the next events.

The Euro PM2025 Press&Sinter Special Interest Seminar “Trends impacting the European Press&Sinter sector”, prepared with the objective of having presentations from outside the PM community on transversal topics of interest for the PM and Press&Sinter community, had to be unfortunately cancelled on the day when it was organised, Tuesday 16th September. The presentations initially set up were two:
- “Metals & sustainability in the EU policy cycle 2024 – 2029”, Ms Kamila Slupek (Eurometaux, Belgium)
- “Extraction of critical minerals for increased self-sufficiency”, Prof. Pär Jonsén (LKAB, Sweden)
Professor Jonsén had to cancel due to family issues a couple of days before, and Ms Slupek’s plane was cancelled, so she could not arrive on time for the session. The two topics, i.e. the possible availability of an all-EU supply chain for REE-based magnets by exploiting he Swedish deposits owned by LKAB, and the expected policies on metals by the EU, that will have a direct impact on all metal industries, PM included, would have been of great interest, and the speakers will surely be invited in other occasions. A very P&S-related SIS was that on Automotive, titled “Scenarios in the Automotive sector”, that was held on Wednesday 17th September and chaired by Dr. Cesar Molins of AMES, and chair od EuroPress&Sinter. Two speeches were featured:
- “Scenarios in the Automotive sector”, Mrs Mariola Hauke (CLEPA, Belgium)
- “Powertrain outlook 2035- deep-dive into European landscape”, Mr Saboor Imran (S&P Global-Mobility Division, Germany)
Clearly, the sector is undergoing a big change, and both presentations covered that, one from the OEMs’ perspective, and the other focusing on the e-drives trends. The Press&Sinter surveys held in March-April 2025 were the main topic of the Sectoral Group meeting on Tuesday 16th September, again chaired by Dr. C. Molins. B. Vicenzi (EPMA) showed the results and also invited to some discussion. He also presented the seminar being organised in Lyon in June next year, that will be dedicated to PM in automotive: “Gearing Up for the Future: PM Breakthroughs in Automotive Engineering”, 3-4 June 2026. The seminar will be held inside the free-to-enter “3D Print -Lyon” event, thus with no fee, but a registration will be necessary. A call for speakers is already accessible on the EPMA Seminars website. For more details, see the relevant chapter in this newsletter. The Benchmarking exercise for 2024 performance was just launched, with deadline 4th November 2025. All EPMA member companies dealing with P&S production are called to participate! Please note that categories include also equipment, powder, etc., so not only P&S parts makers can participate (but a minimum of 6 participant companies per category will be necessary to run the exercise for that category).
Club Projects – AlloyHard
The project partners have met in Glasgow during the EuroPM congress to discuss the current status on the project. The next steps have been decided as continuing tests and experiments followed by the evaluation of the pre-alloyed powders to obtain concrete experimental data.
EHQS
A Special Interest Seminar was held during the EuroPM congress to discuss Sustainability, Standards and EU policies for PM. Three presentations were done on each subjest separately by Aaron Jennings (IMR), Roozbeh Valadian (Granutools) and Kenan Boz (EPMA).
EPMI
The EPMA's academic working group, EPMI, is undergoing some changes as some of its members are gradually reaching retirement. We are going to let go José Manuel Torralba, of University Carlos II of Madrid, and IMDEA, that will stop working with next year, and has been a long-term member of EPMA and EPMI: all the best for your new life, José! In the meantime, his colleague Monica Campos is stepping in; and earlier in the year Frédéric Bernard of Université de Bourgogne and Georgina Miranda of University of Aveiro had joined the group.
In Glasgow there was the usual in person meeting, that saw also the visit of the newly elected EPMA President Adeline Riou, so that she could have the chance of interacting with this community that is crucial for innovation in our technologies.

EPMI will continue its activity of advising on EPMA activities, especially for what concerns the technical part of the congress, education efforts like the Summer School, and fostering collaborative R&D; it will also help, as suggested by President Riou, to review the mapping of the R&D in PM in Europe, that is a starting point to assess the needs in terms of industry/academia collaboration for the upcoming challenges.

Automotive Seminar 2026
The automotive industry is accelerating into a new era, defined by electrification, lightweighting, and sustainable mobility, demanding innovative manufacturing solutions, and Powder Metallurgy (PM) is perfectly positioned to deliver, offering high-performance components, exceptional material efficiency, and the design flexibility needed for future vehicles. The scope of the seminar “Gearing Up for the Future: PM Breakthroughs in Automotive Engineering “ (Lyon, 3-4 June 2026) is thus broad, covering everything from PM in e-Powertrain systems (gears, rotors, magnetic components) and lightweight structural parts to friction materials, thermal management, and the growing role of Additive Manufacturing (AM) for both prototypes and production parts. But also topics on “conventional” internal combustion drivetrains will be considered. Discussions will tackle critical industry concerns like recycling, the circular economy, and the standardization/qualification of PM processes, alongside essential market insights. The event will feature about 10 technical speeches and 2 interactive round tables designed to foster debate among experts, end-users, and suppliers.
This year features a special collaboration, as the seminar will be held in partnership with and parallel to 3D Print Lyon 2026 (June 2–4, Eurexpo, Lyon). This unique synergy offers attendees free participation in our seminars. Our upcoming Energy PM Seminar "Powering the Future: Powder Metallurgy for Advanced Energy Solutions" (2-3 June) will be held in partnership with, and parallel to, the 3D Print Lyon event, from June 2–4, 2026, at Eurexpo, Lyon. Summer School 2026
EPMA is pleased to announce that the 2026 Summer School will take place in Porto, Portugal, from 19 to 24 July 2026, in collaboration with the University of Porto.
This five-day programme will be coordinated by Dr. Christian Gierl-Mayer (TU Wien, Austria) and Dr. Marco Actis-Grande (Politecnico di Torino, Italy). The sessions will be led by experts from both industry and academia, covering many of the main topics shaping today’s Powder Metallurgy industry.
The course offers a mix of lectures, group problem-solving activities, and laboratory work, giving participants the chance to strengthen their technical knowledge. There will also be networking and social events, providing a great opportunity to meet peers and exchange ideas in a relaxed atmosphere.
