Introduction
Dear Members,
As we enter the summer months, June brings both renewed energy and important milestones for our community. This edition highlights the projects that have taken shape over the past months, the initiatives now gaining momentum, and the opportunities ahead. I hope you enjoy this update and feel inspired by the collective progress we continue to make.
In May, our Annual General Meeting provided a comprehensive review of our activities, financial results, and the proposed 2027 budget. Members also approved the alignment of membership fees for non‑European entities with those of European members. All motions were validated.
Preparations for EuroPM2026 in Budapest continue to advance steadily. Paper reviews will begin shortly, registrations are open, and we encourage early booking before travel costs increase. Opportunities remain to contribute as a speaker through the Industry Corner, Campfire Sessions, or Technical Briefs within the PM Forum. The 2026 awardees have also been selected, with winners to be announced during the plenary session. Euro PM26 – Euro Powder Metallurgy Congress
The Summer School once again exceeded expectations, with more pre‑registrations than available seats. Selecting participants was a challenging task, and while a few candidates could not be accommodated, they are warmly encouraged to join the Young Engineers' Day.
Our 2026 seminar programme has also been a success. The WinterEV seminar, supported by TU Wien, received excellent feedback, and the Energy and Automotive seminars held alongside the 3D Print exhibition attracted strong participation. 2027 event are under preparation.
Our European project portfolio continues to grow. Two projects—RESQTOOL and REPTIS—are progressing well, the START project has just been successfully completed, and in May we officially launched the new PMEXCEL initiative. These projects strengthen our contribution to innovation and reinforce our role within the European PM landscape.

Euro PM2026 Congress & Exhibition
The Euro PM2026 Congress & Exhibition will take place in Budapest, Hungary from 11 to 14 October 2026.

Budapest is one of Europe's major capitals, located along the Danube River, where Buda and Pest form two distinct historical and cultural areas. The city is known for its architecture, thermal baths and cultural heritage, and is also an established centre for research and innovation, with major academic institutions and a growing industrial and technology sector.
Euro PM2026 will take place at the Hungexpo Budapest Congress and Exhibition Centre, a modern conference and exhibition venue in Budapest, well suited for hosting large international scientific events.
Located approximately 15 minutes from the city centre, Hungexpo is accessible by public transport and car. The venue is served by the Budapest Metro and local bus lines and is about 20 minutes from Budapest International Airport.
Euro PM2026 Programme
This year we received a total of 226 abstracts (202 Oral presentations and 24 Poster presentations). The very high-quality of the submitted papers allowed the TPC members to create a high number of sessions (47 sessions on 3 days) covering a wide range of topics within powder metallurgy.
The technical programme will be enhanced by 9 Special Interest Seminars and 6 Sectoral meetings. Full details of the programme can be found here.
The Euro PM2026 Plenary Session will take place on the morning of Monday, 12 October, and will open with a welcome address by the two Congress Chairs.
The session will set the stage for Euro PM2026, bringing together EPMA leadership and invited keynote speakers to discuss the major trends and challenges shaping the future of Powder Metallurgy in Europe. It will also include the presentation of the 2026 EPMA Awards, recognising outstanding contributions to the PM community.
The winner of the Thesis Competition will also be invited to the Congress to give a short presentation on their work. In addition, the session will recognise the recipients of the Distinguished Service Award (DSA), Fellowship Awards, Sustainability Award and the 2026 Keynote Paper Awards.
During the coffee and lunch breaks, Congress participants will have the opportunity to attend our usual Industry Corner and Technical Briefs presentations, as well as Campfire meetings, open to all attendees.

European Projects

START comes to its end, with results and a strong dissemination
The Horizon Europe START project, focused on developing tellurium-free thermoelectric materials from mine waste sulphides (tetrahedrites), is now concluding at the end of May 2026. The consortium achieved very interesting results, that have been summarised in a new leaflet available for download on the project website3:
- Developed tellurium‑free thermoelectric materials based on tetrahedrites, reducing reliance on critical raw materials
- Identified and processed European mine waste as a sustainable source of secondary raw materials
- Converted heterogeneous mining residues into high‑performance thermoelectric materials
- Produced p-type thermoelectric components with strong (exceptional) performance and stability
- Demonstrated scalable manufacturing, covering the full value chain from materials to thermoelectric modules
- Developed and validated thermoelectric devices and systems, including prototype applications
- Confirmed environmental and economic viability through life-cycle assessment (LCA) and cost analyses
- Established two business cases, the μCHP-TEG and the Flex-TEG-Solar systems, to support market uptake in mid- and low-temperature ranges
- Created value-chain models and a Technology Marketplace to facilitate exploitation of results
- Supported the creation of new structures for industrial deployment, including a Sustainable Thermoelectric Alliance (STA) and a dedicated START European Thermoelectric Systems OÜ (SETS) service company, that will guarantee a long term exploitation phase
- Contributed to circular economy objectives, mine-site remediation, and waste heat recovery for clean energy generation
In April, the consortium met for the last time in general assembly, in La Palma (Canary Islands), hosted by the local partner LPRC.
The project took part in a co-organised (with 10 other EU projects) side event of the Raw Materials Week in Brussels (21st November 2025), and the organised three important dissemination events on its own (with EPMA at the forefront in the organisation):
- a Final Training Workshop at the Ikonik Hotel in Lisbon on 26th March 2026 (the session has been recorded and published on YouTube)
- a Final Workshop at the Thon Centre Brussels hotel on 19th May 2026 (the session has been recorded and published on YouTube)
- a Side Session in the EIT RawMaterials Summit at The Egg Conference Centre in Brussels, on 20th May 2026.

The activities will continue with the legacy entities created, and partly under the support of the COST Action SUSTENET4.

RESQTOOL progresses and prepares for an ISO standard on HM labelling

The Horizon Europe project RESQTOOL, coordinated by EPMA and launched in December 2023, focuses on improving the circularity of hardmetals by enhancing the recycling of tungsten and cobalt, two critical raw materials. The project addresses this objective through advancements in the Zinc Reclaim process and the development of bio-based chemical leaching approaches. The recent sharp increase in tungsten prices has further underlined the relevance and urgency of this work.
Initial results are promising: an automated sorting station was built, codes are being tested, the recycling processes are being improved and the bio-derived chemical recycling upscaled, the first samples produced using recycled powders have demonstrated the required performance, paving the way for the manufacturing of tools containing at least 70% recycled material.

Following a positive outcome at the ISO TC119 meeting last October, the consortium has started collaborating with an external consultant to develop a draft ISO standard for the labelling of hardmetal components. This initiative is expected to facilitate recycling processes and provide additional benefits for part producers.
An update on RESQTOOL will be presented by J. Pötschke (Fraunhofer IKTS) at World PM2026 in Montreal on 29th June.
In Euro PM2026, the project will have a booth; and several presentations in the technical sessions.

REPTiS passes the first assessment and moves towards the first samples

The REPTiS project focuses on scaling up an innovative chemical process, already patented before the project, to produce titanium alloy powders from Ukrainian ilmenite ores, while eliminating the need for conventional melting and atomisation steps. This approach aligns with the EU strategy to secure sustainable Critical Raw Materials supply chains by strengthening sourcing from reliable partner countries.
Efforts of the first part of the project were centred on the mining and processing site in Ukraine, where the first batches of concentrated ilmenite have already been successfully delivered for further downstream processing, and now are moving to the optimisation of powder production and validation by prototyping for several case studies in medical, consumer goods and aerospace
In April, the project underwent its first formal review by the funding agency HaDEA, covering the initial 18 months of activities. The consortium received a fully positive evaluation, marking an important milestone for the project.
REPTiS has achieved the following key results:
- Established a complete specification framework linking raw materials, powder properties and industrial applications
- Demonstrated optimised and more sustainable ilmenite extraction and beneficiation processes, and achieved major environmental improvements, including up to ~47% reduction in carbon footprint
- Identified and validated additional resource streams, in the weathering crust, like kaolin and other critical raw materials
- Produced the precursor feedstock for titanium alloy powders, and the first samples of Ti-alloy powders, initiating the development of advanced powder processing and application-ready materials
- Established LCA/LCC methodologies and datasets for benchmarking environmental and economic performance
- Implemented strong dissemination, coordination and timely delivery of project results and milestones

REPTiS took part in several events, in particular the Raw Materials Week, where our partner Velta played a big role, in two panels in the main programme and speaking in a co-organised side event on 21st November 2025. K. Boz, the coordinator, spoke at the AMC Turkey 2026 conference and will do the same at the EMA in Dresden on 3rd June. L. Aboussouan will present it in WorldPM2026 in Montreal, on 29th June 2026.
At Euro PM2026, there will be presentations about REPTiS, both in the technical programme and in a special event that REPTiS, together with two other Horizon Europe projects (EURO-TITAN and AVANTiS): and industrial workshop on the full supply chain of Titanium, titled “Understanding the Titanium Value Chain”, that will take place (with free access upon registration) on 14th October 2026
A second issue of the REPTiS newsletter was published in November 2025, and a third is in the pipeline.
On 6th November 2025 REPTiS produced its first free Training Webinar, “Mining and beneficiation of ilmenite-bearing heavy mineral sands”, that contained two lectures:
- “Mining of ilmenite on the example of the Birzulivske deposit in UA” – Artem Yarovinsky (Velta Mining / REPTiS Project)
- “Beneficiation opportunities for ilmenite-bearing heavy mineral sands” – Michael Lechner (Montanuniversität Leoben / REPTiS Project)

A second Training Webinar, “Perspectives on Titanium Processing and Component Performance” will run on Wednesday 10th June 2026, 15:00-16:15 CEST. The foreseen lectures are the following:

The partners have also met in Athens, hosted by the partner IRES, in April 2026, for their Review Meeting, which led, as explained, to the approval of the finding agency about the work carried out until now.

PMEXCEL
A new EU funded project by Erasmus+ programme is launched with a kick-off meeting on the dates of 12-13 May at EPMA offices in Chantilly. The PMEXCEL project consortium consists of 12 partners, where the coordination will be done by EPMA for a duration of 4 years.

PMEXCEL is a project for creating Centres of Excellence in PM industry based on the latest EU policies such as the Union of Skills, the Green Deal, Osnabrück Declaration and the Critical Raw Materials Act. This will be done by analysing the skill needs of PM industry and developing an online e-learning platform accredited by the EU as Micro-Credentials that will serve for young people/students to improve their competences, as well as transforming and updating the current labour force in PM industry with obsolete skills. The project aims to improve innovation and sustainability, being directly aligned with the EU vision of a climate-neutral, circular and resource-efficient industry by:
- Addressing sectoral skills gaps in PM critical for green and digital transitions,
- Creating flexible Vocational Education and Training (VET) systems that support innovation, inclusion and sustainability.
- Integrating sustainability and circular economy principles into vocational training programmes.
To meet the evolving demands of the PM industry, PMEXCEL collaborates strategically with partners in Sweden, Germany, France, Belgium, Spain, and Türkiye to place a strong emphasis on VET with the long-term goal of building a skilled workforce that can drive the industry’s future.

EPMA for new projects
In 2025, EPMA has been very active in submitting and participating in Horizon Europe and Erasmus+ proposals. Some of you have met us during the proposals preparation and can testify the commitment in trying to secure funding for your R&D in powder metallurgy and critical raw materials. While waiting for the result of these submissions, EPMA's technical team is now already actively engaged in preparation for the new calls in 2026!

Sectoral Groups

Annual AM Trends Survey 2026 results has been published on the 30th of April 2026. The aim of the survey is to collect and present information on the AM industry to track the general trends of the Additive Manufacturing Sector in terms of recent sales trends, business attitudes and effect of the new state of global economy. Specifically, the survey examines adoption rates of various AM technologies and materials, key growth sectors, and the challenges businesses face, including supply chain issues and economic uncertainties. It also explores R&D investments and strategic adaptations. The survey’s data will provide insights into the AM industry’s current health and future direction, aiding informed decisions. The results are presented at the general assembly of EPMA, and the plenary session of EuroPM congress in Budapest.

The focus is currently on the organisation of the dedicated sessions in Euro PM2026.
In the Special Interest Seminar the focus will be again on magnetic materials, although from a different angle and a different format. This time the session, that will be held on Tuesday 13th October 16:00-17:30, will be a panel discussion, instead of a sequence of presentation. The topic will be “The future of magnetic materials for electric motors” and the plan is to have the view of permanent and soft magnetic materials in Europe, that are going to be the core of the electric drives, and the view of downstream stakeholders. The panellists and the moderator(s) will be announced soon.
For the group meeting, that as always will be open to all participants in the conference and will run in the preceding session from 13:45 to 15:15, the programme still needs confirmation, but it should include the review of the activities of the group, and one or two presentations by companies producing parts based on functional materials.
EuroFM is still collecting materials for the second edition of the brochure “Intro to FM”.

The Summerev meeting of experts has been held at TU Wien in Vienna, Austria on the dates of 4-5 May 2026. The topic of the meeting was “From materials design to application: Alternative binders, coatings, advanced characterization, reliability, and recycling”.
The meeting aimed to examine in more depth the full lifecycle of hard materials—from raw materials and materials design, through innovations in alternative binders and advanced coatings, to state-of-the-art characterization techniques (including synchrotron and neutron methods). The program further addresses reliability, application-relevant testing, and concludes with sustainable recycling strategies. Each contribution is targeted from an expert in the field followed by a practical or theoretical worked example of how the technique or modelling approach will contribute to advancing our knowledge of the properties of hard materials.


EuroHIP has organized two special Interest Seminars and a Group meeting at the EuroPM congress in Glasgow. The SIS on Oil & Gas industry had two presentations from Ajai Sankar (University College Dublin) and Tomas Berglund (MTC Powder Solutions). An interactive session moderated by Iain Dandy has been held during the sectoral group meeting to discuss how to improve the activities of EuroHIP, followed by a keynote presentation by Victor Samarov (Synertech PM, USA) on large scale near net shape PM-HIP.


During the last months, the usual survey has been run in the European MIM community. It included the statistics, questions on trends and, for EPMA member companies, the benchmarking. Some results have already been communicated in the EPMA General Assembly and the full results are being transmitted to the participants. EPMA members will also have the chance of being informed on the results of the surveys in the Statistics Webinar, on 11th June.
The EuroMIM group will have its open group meeting on Tuesday 13th October 8:30-10:00, of course during the Budapest EuroPM congress. The Trend and Statistics surveys on the European market will be as always presented and then the format will include a panel discussion on the present bottlenecks for the development of the industry in Europe, following 3 year with a contraction in the performance.
In the following session slot in the same day, that is 10:45 to 12:15, the Special Interest Seminar will take place. It was chosen to use the same title as last year: “Navigating Strategic Opportunities and Challenges in MIM”. This time, the stage light will go on European MIM producers who are working in the field of defence, and for the moment confirmed speakers will actually come from Eastern Europe, as a tribute to the conference venue: AFT Hungary, and Vibrom from Slovakia.
The group is also going to produce short videos to raise the awareness on MIM, in addition to a review of the brochure “Intro to MIM”.

Over the past months, the annual surveys have been conducted within the European Press & Sinter and Powder Production communities, providing insights into key statistics and trends in the sector.
Preliminary results were presented during the EPMA General Assembly, while the full set of findings on Press&Sinter is currently being shared with survey participants. EPMA members will also have the opportunity to review and discuss the results during the upcoming Statistics Webinar scheduled for 11th June.
The EuroPress&Sinter, apart from endorsing the seminar on automotive “Gearing Up for the Future: PM Breakthroughs in Automotive Engineering” that takes place on 3rd-4th June inside the 3D Print Lyon event at the Eurexpo, has been organising the sessions for the EuroPM congress. In Budapest, the press&sinter-specific sessions will be on Wednesday 14th October, in the morning. At 8:30, the group will have its meeting, where all participants in the congress are invited. The focus, after the review of the activities and of the results of the statistics and trend surveys, will be on the topic of stress corrosion cracking, with a presentation by M. Schneider (GKN) and a subsequent discussion.
After the break (10:45-12:15), there will be the Press&Sinter Special Interest Seminar. This year it will be a very ambitious session, on the general topic “Chasing Higher Performance for Press&Sinter Parts”. There will be not one, but three distinct panel discussions, of 30’ each: the first dedicated to alloys and powders (with the main European powder producers), the second to pressing technology (with the main press manufacturers), the third to sintering and in general part production (with one furnace manufacturer and 3 important part manufacturers). A very interesting session!
Club Projects
AlloyHard
The project partners had an interim meeting in San Sebastian at CEIT facilities to discuss the current status on the project. AlloyHard investigates the influence of binder alloying in Hardmetals on their properties. Priority of the next steps will be given to understanding: (i) Binder phase chemistry and distribution, (ii) FCC/HCP phase balance in the binder, (iii) Local mechanical behaviour of the binder phase. A short online technical follow up meeting is foreseen before the summer break

SimuHOT
A new club project has been proposed by IWM Aachen University, UPC and NPL on "Multiscale Simulative Investigation of High Temperature Characteristics of Hardmetal". The project will have a duration of 12 months and expected to start at first quarter of 2027. Interested industrial partners are invited to join the project consortium.
EPMI
Within the EPMA Academic Working Group (EPMI), a key development was the appointment of Monica Campos (University Carlos III of Madrid) as the new co-chair. Her mandate began in January 2026, following the completion of the four-year term of Professor Susanne Norgren (Lund University). Monica Campos will serve in this role until January 2030. The current co-chair, Thomas Weissgärber (TU Dresden and IFAM Dresden), will continue his mandate until January 2028.
In recent months, EPMI members contributed actively to the development of the new PM Roadmap and supported additional survey activities.
Looking ahead, EPMI will continue to advise on EPMA activities, particularly in relation to the technical programme of the EuroPM Congress, educational initiatives such as the EPMA Summer School and the Erasmus+ project PMEXCEL, and the promotion of collaborative research and innovation. The group will also support the ongoing mapping of R&D in powder metallurgy across Europe, which serves as a basis for identifying future needs and strengthening collaboration between industry and academia.

Automotive Seminar 2026
The automotive sector is entering a new phase, driven by electrification, lightweighting and sustainability requirements, where advanced manufacturing solutions are essential. Powder Metallurgy (PM) is well positioned to support this transition, offering high-performance components, material efficiency and the flexibility needed for next-generation vehicles.
Taking place in just a few days, the seminar "Gearing Up for the Future: PM Breakthroughs in Automotive Engineering"1 (Lyon, 3–4 June 2026) will bring together key industrial and research players to present the latest developments in PM for automotive applications. The programme covers a wide range of topics, from PM solutions for e-drive powertrain systems and high-performance magnetic materials to surface engineering, additive manufacturing and advanced design approaches. The seminar will also address broader industry challenges such as sustainability, circularity and process qualification, and will conclude with an interactive panel discussion on the future of PM and AM in next-generation automotive systems.
Organised inside 3D Print Lyon (2–4 June, Eurexpo), the event, that is free of charge, offers participants the opportunity to engage both with the PM community and the wider additive manufacturing ecosystem, making it a key meeting point for OEMs, suppliers and researchers shaping the future of mobility.
Energy seminar 2026
The global energy sector is undergoing a rapid transition towards cleaner, more efficient and sustainable systems. In this context, Powder Metallurgy plays a key role by enabling the production of high-performance components for demanding energy applications, from nuclear and renewables to emerging technologies.
Taking place in just a few days, the Energy PM Seminar (2–3 June 2026, Lyon) "Powering the Future: Powder Metallurgy for Advanced Energy Solutions"2 will gather experts from industry and research to present the latest developments in PM for advanced energy solutions. The programme covers a broad spectrum of topics, including PM-HIP technologies, advanced materials, additive manufacturing, and digitalisation approaches supporting energy systems.
The seminar also features contributions on additive manufacturing in the energy sector, on industrialisation of advanced manufacturing technologies, on powder behaviour, qualification and sustainability. The programme will conclude with a panel discussion focusing on reliable energy systems and the role of PM and AM from powder to qualified components.
Organised inside 3D Print Lyon (2–4 June, Eurexpo), the seminar, that has no entrance fee, provides a joint platform for the PM and additive manufacturing communities, offering participants valuable opportunities for networking, knowledge exchange and cross-sector collaboration.
EPMA Events
EPMA Young Engineers Days 2026
This two-day event helps to raise awareness and interest in Powder Metallurgy careers among young engineers. EPMA Young Engineers Days 2026 will take place on 12 & 13 October 2026, at the HUNGEXPO in Budapest, Hungary during the Euro PM2026 Congress & Exhibition.
The event includes lectures on the basics of PM, access to the Euro PM2026 exhibition area, the plenary session on Monday morning, coffee breaks, lunches, Poster Reception, a networking dinner on Monday 12 October and one hotel night (double occupancy room) on Monday.
